CVG: Def Jam Rapstar First Look

 

We've taken a first look at 4mm Games' Def Jam Rapstar at Gamescom and have come away impressed.

If you like SingStar but find all that Abba stuff a bit too vanilla, this'll be right up your street. The game sees you plugging in your camera and then rapping along to famous tracks, before uploading your best 30 seconds for the game's online community to enjoy/laugh at.

Def Jam Rapstar: Not Just Rap Karaoke

 

One of the stops on our E3 tour had us meeting up with the folks at Def Jam Interactive and 4mm Games. We knew we were slated to see a collaborative effort between the two companies and that the game was geared exclusively towards the hip-hop demographic. Other than that, we were in the dark. But it didn't take long for us to grasp what the duo hoped to accomplish with Def Jam Rapstar. Read on for the scoop.

Will Def Jam's 'Rapstar' Game Be Hip-Hop's 'American Idol'?

In the video game world nowadays, music games are tops. Chances are, you've gotten drunk with friends and played Rock Band or Guitar Hero -- you know, those enormously popular band games featuring the plastic instruments you pretend to play. But if you were ever jonesing for some hip-hop in these kind of games, you were pretty much stuck with a Beastie Boys track.

That's where "Def Jam Rapstar" comes in.

Def Jam Rapstar Preview - E3 2009

 

You can get Country Track Packs for Rock Band. You can sing along with Hannah Montana. Sony's SingStar series has a whole game devoted to ABBA. So where the hell are the rap games?

That's the question asked and answered by 4mm, a new company formed by in part by Gary Foreman and Jamie King, who were also the co-founders of Rockstar Games. It's not rock stars they're working with now though, it's rap stars. As in Def Jam Rapstar, the company's first announced game. At E3 2009, President Jamie King and the 4mm posse sat me down to play the game and lay down some rhymes.

Microphone Check, One, Two, One, Two


by Evan Narcisse (Crispy Gamer)--While DJ Hero and Scratch: The Ultimate DJ will be battling it out to corner the fake turntable segment of the rhythm game market, MCing‚ arguably the most recognizable part of hip-hop music‚ still suffers from a woeful under-representation. Sure, Eidos' Get On Da Mic dribbled out to consoles a few years ago and sundry rap tracks claw their way onto franchises like Konami's Karaoke Revolution (heh, remember them?), Rock Band or Guitar Hero. But, a game wholeheartedly devoted to rap performance hasn't yet broken through to the mainstream.
